First Day of Advent--Sunday, December 2, 2012

Elizabeth and Zechariah

Our story begins with an older couple, Zechariah and Elizabeth. They are both faithful followers of God, described as “righteous before God” in verse 1:6. Despite being faithful followers of God, they cannot have children. I wonder what they must have thought, how they must have felt, when they wanted children but could never have one. Frustration, anger, fear, despair, loneliness, distance… Possibly all these things. Yet, in this story, God brings hope to Zechariah and Elizabeth.

An angel appears, letting Zechariah and Elizabeth know that they will have a son, who they are to name John. Out of the despair of Elizabeth and Zechariah, God delivers hope. During the time of Advent, we are reminded that God continues to deliver hope. Our hope is in Christ, and we wait for Christ to return like Zechariah and Elizabeth waited for a child.

God of Advent, kindle within us the flame of hope. Help us be your beacons of hope for people and places weighed down by hopelessness. As we enter with you into this Advent journey, help us to be your mind, heart, and hands in the world. For we pray in your name. Amen.
